NIWA Launches Clampdown on Unlicensed Boats to Boost Water Safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced a nationwide clampdown on unlicensed boat operators and unauthorized loading points, following a series of fatal accidents on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

Speaking in Abuja, NIWA Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, said the move was aimed at curbing recurring mishaps and strengthening compliance with safety regulations.

He ordered the immediate removal of unlicensed boats and watercraft from the waterways, warning that operators without proper certification would no longer be allowed to ply Nigerian waters.

Mr. Oyebamiji further directed boat owners to enforce compulsory use of lifejackets, while ensuring that all vessels clearly display their names and load lines in line with safety standards.
