National Grid Collapses for the First Time in 2025‎

‎The national electricity grid on Wednesday suffered its first collapse of the year, plunging parts of the country into darkness.

‎Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that power generation crashed from 2,917.83 megawatts to just 1.5 megawatts between 11 a.m. and 12 noon.

‎Confirming the development, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced on its official social media handle that the outage was due to a total loss of supply from the grid at about 11:23 a.m.

The company assured customers that efforts were ongoing with relevant stakeholders to restore power once stability is achieved.

‎This incident comes after repeated denials of grid collapse reports earlier in the year by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In February, the company dismissed claims of multiple collapses, while the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) clarified in July that no collapse was recorded in the first quarter of 2025.

‎Nigeria has struggled with frequent grid breakdowns in recent years.

In 2024 alone, the national grid collapsed 11 times, leading to widespread blackouts and disruptions to homes and businesses nationwide.
