Students deployed to Metro FM, Lagos, by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) have been charged to take their internship with utmost seriousness, as it serves as a stepping stone to professional life after graduation.
Addressing the new intakes, the General Manager of the station, Miss Maria Ihuoma, cautioned against truancy, stressing that practical experience is as important as academic knowledge.
She also emphasized the importance of discipline and professional appearance within the station’s premises.
“We don’t want you looking anyhow by dressing the way it pleases you. We don’t want you looking shabbily, especially when we have guests coming for business with the station. So look good when you are coming to Metro FM,” she said.
Miss Ihuoma further urged the interns to keep their logbooks updated and duly signed by their supervisors, describing the document as a reflection of their commitment.
She also introduced them to some of the key radio formats to deepen their understanding of broadcasting.
The Head of Programmes, Miss Abayomi Odeniran, described the internship opportunity as a privilege.
She encouraged the students to approach every interaction with staff as a learning moment.
“Whoever is reaching out to you, tutoring you, saying one thing or the other—take it to heart. Whatever you pick, or anything someone says to you, defines the lesson,” she advised.
In the same vein, the Head of Marketing, Mrs. Oby Nwaoha, reminded the interns that they also represent the image of Metro FM.
She explained that the station depends heavily on advertisements and sponsorships to sustain operations, and urged the students to contribute where possible.
“We are expected to make money so that we can service our equipment and other amenities to stay on air for our listeners. If you have contacts, we can write and speak to them. If the business scales through, you get a 10% commission,” she revealed.
At the end of the orientation, the interns pledged to uphold the values of Metro FM, promising to make the most of the opportunity and apply themselves diligently throughout the training period.
