FG Warns Farmers Against Harmful Chemicals Endangering Human Health

The Federal Government has cautioned farmers and food vendors against the use of harmful substances in food processing and preservation, warning that millions of Nigerians are at risk.

Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Olatunji Bello, gave the warning at a one-day sensitisation programme in Enugu on forced palm oil, fruit ripening, contaminated meat, and unsafe grains.

Bello urged farmers, processors, vendors, and business owners to stop using chemicals such as calcium carbide, bromate, Sudan red, and formalin, stressing that they are toxic and pose serious health risks.

He also called for strict adherence to hygiene practices, proper packaging, accurate labeling, and respect for consumers’ rights in line with national and global standards.

According to him, unsafe food practices not only endanger lives but also erode consumer trust, disrupt trade, and damage the reputation of businesses.

The FCCPC, he added, has intensified market surveillance, consumer education, and strategic partnerships, leading to facility shutdowns, sanctions, and prosecution of offenders.
