The United States has, for the sixth time, vetoed a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that sought an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza alongside the release of hostages.
U.S. Deputy Middle East Envoy, Mr. Morgan Ortagus, explained that Washington rejected the resolution because it did not adequately condemn Hamas or recognize Israel’s right to self-defense.
All 14 other Security Council members voted in favor of the draft, which described Gaza’s humanitarian situation as “catastrophic” and urged Israel to lift all restrictions on humanitarian aid.
The veto comes as the United Nations humanitarian office warns that the last lifelines for civilians are collapsing in Gaza City, where Israel has intensified its military offensive.
