The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to credible and merit-based promotions within the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that compulsory promotion examinations are now an integral part of career advancement for officers.
On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Commission conducted promotion examinations for 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) recommended for elevation to the rank of Superintendent of Police. The written exercise took place at the Parry Osayande Auditorium, PSC Corporate Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja.

Declaring the examinations open, Hon. Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (Rtd.), Commissioner representing the Judiciary in the PSC, emphasized that the measure is designed to enhance officers’ intellectual capacity and improve the quality of policing service delivery. He noted that promotion examinations would henceforth be central to officers’ future in the Force.
In his remarks, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd.) Chairman of the PSC Standing Committee on Police Matters, described the examinations as timely and essential, pointing out that the absence of such a system over the years had weakened the image of the Police. He stated: “There is systemic rot in the Force, and that is why it is no longer highly regarded. The Nigeria Police has been the only security agency without promotion examinations. Going forward, if you fail, you fail. We will continue with this process to restore integrity to the institution.”
DIG Lakanu also cautioned candidates against attempts to bribe PSC staff, warning that any officer caught engaging in such acts would be disqualified.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.) reiterated that the PSC remains committed to timely, credible, transparent, and merit-based promotions. He maintained that ranks must be earned, stressing that the introduction of examinations would give new credibility to officers wearing higher insignia.
He further explained that the Commission envisages “a Police that can function with minimal supervision and deliver on its mandate without undue influence.”
The promotion exercise continues next week with the Commissioner’s cadre, while a plenary meeting of the Commission is scheduled for later this month.
