Vice President Kashim Shettima has intensified Nigeria’s campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
At a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, Shettima underscored Nigeria’s contributions to global peacekeeping, democracy, and regional stability, stressing the need for stronger international support.

The discussions also touched on climate change, sustainable development, and Nigeria’s expanding collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP).
Delegation members revealed that Guterres praised Nigeria’s strides in artificial intelligence, highlighting the launch of Africa’s first government-backed multilingual language model.
In response, the UN chief assured Nigeria of continued support and partnership.
Earlier, Shettima held talks with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, with both parties agreeing to strengthen ties in trade, defence, and migration.

The Vice President also joined world leaders at the Global Leadership Council Meeting, where he reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s focus on digital inclusion and youth empowerment.
