Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to fully embrace Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms to guarantee access to justice for ordinary Nigerians.
Falana made the assertion during an interview with journalists in Umuahia, after paying a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.
The senior lawyer expressed deep concern over what he described as a systemic failure, where only the elite and political class have true access to justice.
He argued that while politically sensitive cases are fast-tracked because they are time-bound, the legal matters of everyday Nigerians suffer inordinate delays.
He further challenged the popular notion that the judiciary is the common man’s last hope, stating, “The judiciary is the last hope of the elite in Nigeria.”
Falana called for a judicial reform that would make all court matters time-bound, ensuring timely justice for every citizen, regardless of status.
Nnamdi Kanu
On the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Falana characterized the case as fundamentally political.
He advocated for a resolution outside the courtroom, suggesting that a political solution is the most viable path forward.
Praise for Abia’s Development
During his visit, the human rights lawyer commended Governor Alex Otti for the visible developmental strides achieved within a short time in office.
He encouraged the governor to intensify efforts and ensure that the people remain the central focus of his administration, allowing them to reap the full benefits of democracy.
