NCF Green Ball Mobilises Nigeria to Beat Plastic Pollution

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) hosted its Annual Green Ball 2025, uniting environmental advocates, corporate organisations, NGOs, and individuals to raise support for combating the growing threat of plastic pollution.

The event—one of NCF’s flagship fundraising platforms—aims to generate resources for sustainability projects across Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme “Raising Finance to Beat Plastic Pollution,” Chairman of NCF’s National Executive Council, Justice Bukunola Adebiyi, described plastic pollution as a devastating threat to human health, wildlife, and the environment.

She noted Lagos as one of the worst-hit areas, generating 13,000 tons of waste daily, with plastics making up nearly 20 percent.

She called on Nigerians to reduce single-use plastics, buy in bulk, recycle more, and embrace reusable containers.

Justice Adebiyi emphasised that recycling alone cannot solve the problem due to high costs and limited capacity, noting that many plastics are non-recyclable.

She urged individuals to adopt simple lifestyle changes and praised organisations such as Chevron Nigeria and the Lagos State Government for their long-standing support for NCF’s conservation initiatives, including the Lekki Conservation Centre.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of Chevron, Mr. Tunde Oyadiran reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, describing plastic pollution as one of the most pressing global challenges.

He highlighted Chevron’s participation in the NCF Walk for Nature and its decades-long support for the Lekki Conservation Centre as part of its sustainability efforts.

A documentary on the dangers of plastic pollution was screened, reinforcing the urgent need for collective action to protect Nigeria’s environment, waterways, wildlife, and communities.

With dignitaries from NLNG, NNPC Retail, Nestlé, Dangote Group and more in attendance, the NCF reiterated its mission to build a society where people prosper while living in harmony with nature, anchored on its 2025–2030 strategic plan.
