The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her visionary impact on education through the Spelling Bee competition, which she introduced over 20 years ago under the New Era Foundation.
Speaking at the opening of the 21st edition, Junior Category, he noted that the initiative continues to inspire academic excellence, confidence and leadership among pupils in Lagos public schools.
Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, the Commissioner praised the sustained commitment of successive Lagos First Ladies, including the current First Lady, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for supporting a programme that has produced notable young achievers, particularly One-Day Governors who have excelled in various fields.
He described the Spelling Bee as one of Nigeria’s most impactful academic platforms.
Permanent Board Member of LASUBEB, Mr Babatunde Adewale, also applauded the government and OEQA for maintaining a competition that identifies and grooms young talents, calling it a leadership-building initiative that strengthens literacy, confidence, and resilience among pupils.
He reaffirmed LASUBEB’s dedication to improving basic education and expanding opportunities for learners to thrive.
Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, highlighted the competition’s role in boosting students’ confidence, diction, and overall academic performance, stressing that mastery of language forms the foundation for learning across subjects.
He emphasised that the programme aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda by promoting equitable access to quality education and preparing pupils to compete globally.

After several elimination rounds, Master Yusuf Yusuf of Community Primary School, Oke-Odo, emerged winner of the 21st edition, Junior Category, while Master Raphael Ntoliba and Master Monday Joshua placed second and third respectively.

Expressing gratitude to his parents and teachers, Yusuf attributed his success to dedication and consistent study.
The competition continues today with the secondary school grand finale, where the next One-Day Governor of Lagos State will be crowned.
