NCAA Engages Airlines, Threatens Penalties for Consumer Rights Breaches

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has stepped up enforcement and passenger education efforts during this yuletide travel rush, warning domestic airlines that breaches of consumer protection regulations will attract sanctions.

At a meeting held on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the NCAA engaged representatives of Rano Air, United Nigeria Airlines and XeJet over repeated violations of Part 19 of the Civil Aviation Regulations, which guarantees passengers’ rights in cases of flight delays, cancellations, refunds, care, accommodation and access to timely information.

Speaking at the meeting, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, stressed that full compliance with the regulations is mandatory, noting that persistent default by any airline would no longer be tolerated.

In a complementary move to protect travellers during the festive season, the NCAA’s Consumer Protection Department has also commenced a four-day nationwide awareness campaign running from December 21 to 24, 2025.

The exercise, taking place across airport terminals, is designed to educate passengers on travel safety, their rights, early airport arrival and available complaint channels.

NCAA officials are engaging travellers directly, distributing information materials and souvenirs as part of efforts to promote a smoother and more informed yuletide travel experience.
