The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has welcomed the First Babies of the Year 2026 during goodwill visits to selected public hospitals across the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maternal and child health.
The visits took place at Ibeju-Lekki, Imota and Gbagada General Hospitals, where three newborns — Baby Oluwadare, Baby Adegeye-Abiodun and Baby Daramola — were celebrated with prayers and gift presentations by the First Lady and the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat.
Baby Oluwadare, a male weighing 2.9kg, was delivered exactly at midnight at Ibeju-Lekki General Hospital to emerge as Lagos State’s symbolic First Baby of 2026.
Baby Adegeye-Abiodun was born at 2:45 a.m. at Imota General Hospital, while Baby Daramola, a female, arrived at midnight at Gbagada General Hospital.



Addressing health workers and parents, Dr. Sanwo-Olu described the birth of a child at the start of a new year as a symbol of renewed hope and shared responsibility.
She noted that healthy deliveries are outcomes of skilled care and sustained investment in healthcare systems.The First Lady highlighted ongoing health interventions by the state, including investments in medical education, maternal and child health programmes and improved healthcare infrastructure.
She commended frontline health workers and urged continued collaboration with partners to strengthen service delivery.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, described the First Baby of the Year event as symbolic, noting that it reflects healthcare as the government’s first priority each year.
The event concluded with prayers for the newborns and their families, as officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring every child in Lagos State gets a healthy start to life.
