The year 2026 has officially begun with a major shift in Nigeria’s fiscal landscape, as the Federal Government’s new tax policy takes effect today, January 1, 2026.
In line with the policy implementation, the Federal Government has announced that the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has formally commenced operations, marking a transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to a unified federal revenue authority.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Arabinrin Atoyebi.According to the statement, the launch of the NRS represents a significant reform aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s revenue mobilisation and management framework to support sustainable national development.
The Service explained that the establishment of the Nigeria Revenue Service is a deliberate and structural reform designed to modernise revenue administration across the country.
It stressed that the transition is not merely a change of name, but a comprehensive reorganisation of how federal revenues are collected, managed and reported.
The reform, the statement noted, is intended to create a more integrated, efficient and technology-driven revenue system aligned with Nigeria’s long-term economic and fiscal objectives.
This, it said, would enable better planning, prudent investment and the building of a more resilient economy.
While the institutional identity has evolved, the Service assured that its core mandate remains unchanged — mobilising federal revenues to fund national development.
It added that professionalism, integrity, fairness and commitment to national service will continue to guide its operations, with staff across the federation remaining central to its mission.
“What is new is a more transparent and stronger delivery framework. The NRS introduces aligned structures and streamlined processes that enhance accountability, transparency and service delivery,” the statement said.
It added that as Nigeria’s unified federal revenue authority, the NRS provides a clearer and more straightforward platform for citizens and businesses to understand their tax obligations and comply with the law.
The Service further emphasised its commitment to the fair application of tax laws without favour or fear, noting that by leveraging innovation and modern administrative practices, the NRS is well positioned to support long-term economic growth and foster trust between government and taxpayers.
“As Nigeria enters 2026, the Nigeria Revenue Service reaffirms its dedication to effective service delivery and responsible revenue administration in support of sustainable national development,” the statement concluded.
