The Nenadi Usman–led faction of the Labour Party (LP) in Rivers State has collapsed its structure into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging full support for LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The Rivers LP Chairman, Gogo Wellington, urged party members and the Obidient Movement across the state’s 23 local councils to follow Obi into ADC and consolidate efforts ahead of the 2027 general election.
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has warned that ADC risks political irrelevance if it fails to field Obi as its presidential candidate in 2027.
Speaking on Arise Television, Fayose described Obi as the party’s strongest asset, arguing that his popularity transcends party platforms and was responsible for LP’s unexpected success in the 2023 general election.
Fayose maintained that Obi remains the only opposition figure with the national appeal capable of galvanising voters and attracting widespread support.
According to him, sidelining Obi would weaken ADC’s chances, stressing that the former Anambra governor’s influence could elevate even a fringe party to national relevance.
Meanwhile, ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, said President Bola Tinubu is defeatable if the opposition adopts the right strategy.
He explained that ADC’s constitutional review and coalition-building efforts are aimed at fostering discipline, unity and strategic candidate selection to avoid past opposition failures.
However, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately engineering crises within opposition parties, including the PDP, NNPP and LP.
He said the strategy was designed to weaken alternatives ahead of 2027 but vowed that ADC would resist any such attempt to destabilise the party.
