Hit-and-Run: Police Arrest LAMATA Bus Driver over Ikeja Tragedy

The Airport Police Command in Lagos has arrested the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old female pedestrian at Airport Bus Stop, Ikeja.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a LAMATA Ashok Leyland bus.

According to the command spokesman, ASP Mohammed Adeola, Police, the victim was struck moments after alighting from the bus and heading toward the airport.

She was rushed by passersby to the Air Force Base Hospital, where doctors confirmed she was dead on arrival due to severe injuries.

Police operatives immediately launched an investigation and, working closely with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, tracked down the fleeing driver.

The suspect, identified as Adewale Abiodun, was later handed over to the Domestic Police Division of the Airport Command and is currently in custody, assisting investigators.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, described the death as a tragic and avoidable loss, warning that reckless and negligent driving will not be tolerated.

She assured the public that justice will be pursued and urged motorists and pedestrians alike to obey traffic regulations to prevent needless loss of life.

Police say the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
