Macaulay Urges Stronger Media Awareness to Prevent Fire Outbreaks

A broadcast journalist and lecturer at the National Broadcast Academy, Ms. Nkechi Macaulay, has called for intensified media sensitisation on fire outbreaks and explosions, stressing that increased public awareness can help prevent avoidable disasters.

Speaking on Media Watch, a RadioOne programme, Ms. Macaulay said the media has not done enough to educate the public on fire prevention measures and appropriate emergency response during incidents.

She urged the Lagos State Fire Service to collaborate more effectively with media platforms to raise awareness and improve both prevention strategies and response mechanisms.

Ms. Macaulay also advised government authorities to strictly enforce urban planning regulations, including mandatory emergency fire exits in buildings.

She emphasised that stronger compliance and public education are essential to reducing the frequency of fire outbreaks.

The call highlights the need for a coordinated effort between media, government, and emergency agencies to enhance public safety and disaster preparedness.
