Gas Shortage Cuts Power Supply, Ikeja Electric Explains Nationwide Drop

Ikeja Electric has attributed the ongoing reduction in electricity supply across its network to a nationwide drop in power generation caused by limited gas supply to thermal power plants.

In a public notice issued on its X handle yesterday, the electricity distribution company said the shortage has significantly reduced the volume of power available on the national grid and the allocation received by distribution companies.

According to the DisCo, the situation has led to a noticeable decline in electricity delivered to customers.

It added that the gas supply challenge has constrained generation capacity, thereby affecting the overall energy available for distribution nationwide.

The company apologised to customers for the inconvenience and appealed for patience, assuring that it remains committed to distributing the available electricity as efficiently and fairly as possible.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has denied reports claiming that some DisCos received zero-megawatt allocations between March 20 and 22, 2026, clarifying that although generation dropped due to gas constraints, available power was continuously dispatched and equitably allocated in line with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) framework.
