Lagos Begins Upgrade of Ikeja GRA Road Network, Seeks Residents’ Cooperation

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to rehabilitate and upgrade key roads within Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA), including Ladoke Akintola Road and the reconstruction of Oladipo Bateye, Tayo Ayeni, Adetunji Adeoba and Sowemimo roads.

As part of efforts to ensure smooth implementation of the projects, the Office of Infrastructure under the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure on Thursday held a stakeholders’ engagement with residents and other affected parties.

The forum provided an opportunity to brief stakeholders on the scope of the projects, expected benefits and possible inconveniences during construction.

Speaking at the meeting, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Mr. Olufemi Daramola, appealed to residents to cooperate with government throughout the construction period Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Infrastructure, Mr. Tokunbo Oyenuga, Daramola explained that some public infrastructure may need to be relocated, including into private premises where necessary, to facilitate urban regeneration and road improvement works.

He assured residents that the projects would be executed within a period of six to fifteen months, subject to prevailing weather conditions.

According to him, “We appeal to residents to bear with the temporary inconveniences that may arise during construction. The projects are designed to improve infrastructure and enhance the quality of life within Ikeja GRA.

While we expect completion within six to fifteen months, weather conditions may affect the timeline where necessary.”On behalf of residents, Chairman of the Ikeja GRA Residents Association (IGRARA), Dr. Muiz Banire, represented by Mr. Ade Atobatele, commended the Lagos State Government for the initiative.

However, he expressed concerns over the proliferation of telecommunications masts on several streets within the GRA, describing them as potential security risks to residents.

“At the same time, we urge the government to ensure prompt completion of the road projects to minimise the hardship that residents and businesses may experience during construction.

We assure the government of the maximum cooperation of residents towards the success of the projects,” Atobatele stated.

The two contractors handling the projects also expressed confidence in the successful delivery of the road network upgrade.

They noted that the improved roads would not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of Ikeja GRA but also stimulate economic activities, improve accessibility and contribute to the overall development of the area.
