Accident Claims Lives of Eight Month Old Baby, One Other on Ikorodu Road

On a sad note, a tragic road accident on Ikorodu Road in Lagos has claimed the lives of an eight-month-old baby girl and an adult woman, along Ikorodu road between Anthony and Obanikoro.

Confirming the incident Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the accident happened when a red lagbus was allegedly over-speeding from Palmgrove towards Anthony and lost control after a mechanical failure, veered off its lane and crashed through the median barrier into an oncoming Danfo commercial bus.

Further investigations by Cobra Response Team revealed that a red commercial bus, registration number AKD-376-YJ lost control on motion while driving inward Ikorodu.

“The incident occurred as a result of over speeding, when the red commercial bus driver changed lanes, and drove across lanes, to collide with an on-coming, fully laden commercial bus, registration number LSR-145-XA, thereby resulting in the accident which left several passengers severely injured”.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu noted that an adult female passenger died instantly, while the infant later died while her mother sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care.

According to the LASEMA Boss, the two mortalities were extricated from the accident vehicles and have been handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, for further processing, while the other 8 victims that were rescued had been stabilized and transported to the nearest hospital.

Dr Oke-Osanyintolu who expressed sadness over the loss, warned motorists, especially commercial drivers, against over-speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and disregard for road safety rules.

Some of the first responders on ground included LASEMA Response Team-Onipanu Base, LASAMBUS, LASTMA, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, FRSC, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Nigerian Police Force, NPF.
