Preparations have reached an advanced stage for the Agege Mini-Marathon scheduled to hold this weekend, with organisers targeting improved fitness and stronger community engagement across political and social groups in the area.
The marathon, expected to attract about 1,000 participants, will commence at the Agege Local Government Area (LGA) Secretariat.
Runners will navigate major neighbourhood routes before finishing at the Orile Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
Organisers disclosed that 200 participants will receive cash prizes of ₦10,000 each, while seven professional athletes are expected to win ₦50,000 each.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony held at the Agege LGA Secretariat, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Chief Mudashiru Obasa, described the Run-for-Asiwaju Mini-Marathon as a strategic platform for engaging, motivating, and mobilising constituents ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Obasa, the marathon symbolises discipline, resilience, and commitment qualities he said are essential for achieving success both in sports and governance, particularly in securing a second term for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“This mini-marathon is not just a sporting activity,” Obasa said.
“It is an opportunity for us to run together in celebration of President Tinubu’s transformative achievements in economic reforms, infrastructure development, internal security, and national unity, while mobilising Nigerians to renew his mandate.”
He added that the event reflects the belief that President Tinubu’s leadership is “a race worth running and winning” for the continued progress and prosperity of Nigeria.
The Speaker also stressed the importance of strengthening collaboration between elected officials and key stakeholders within the local government, advocating for regular engagement sessions on a monthly or quarterly basis to foster inclusiveness and development.
