Air Force Commends LAWMA Over Rapid Waste Clearance in Ikeja

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has received commendation from the Nigerian Air Force Base in Ikeja for its swift evacuation of accumulated waste within the Base environment.

The Commander of the 651 Base Services Group, Mohammad Imam, gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to LAWMA headquarters.

He appreciated the Authority for deploying about twenty waste evacuation trucks to clear refuse from the Base.

According to him, the timely intervention significantly improved sanitation conditions within the Base and underscored LAWMA’s commitment to environmental cleanliness across Lagos State.

He also praised the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos, scheduled to commence on the last Saturday of April, describing it as a critical step toward strengthening public hygiene and environmental responsibility.

The Air Commodore further pledged the support of the Nigerian Air Force in advancing the State’s sanitation and waste management initiatives, noting that personnel from the Base would assist in enforcing environmental standards.

In response, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, thanked the delegation for recognising the Authority’s efforts in maintaining a cleaner Lagos.

He called for deeper collaboration between LAWMA and the Nigerian Air Force, particularly in technical engagement and operational cooperation, to enhance environmental management and sanitation enforcement.

Gbadegesin explained that Lagos is transitioning from a linear waste disposal model to a circular economy approach, where waste is treated as a resource with both economic and environmental value.

He cited the biodigester facility at Ikosi Fruit Market as an example, where organic waste is processed into biogas for energy use.

He also highlighted the LAWMA Academy initiative, which educates school children on waste sorting, recycling practices, and opportunities within the waste management value chain.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with government institutions, corporate organisations, and communities to promote sustainable waste management and environmental responsibility across Lagos State.
