Airfield Lightning Installation: Sigh of Relief as Domestic Airport Runway in Lagos is opened for use

The domestic runway at the Lagos airport has been opened for use after the successful installation of CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting system on the Runway tagged 18L/36R.

This brings to an end, airlines inability to land on the runway after sunset.

The first flight took off this morning on the runway at 6:15am.

The project, which commenced effectively on July 8, 2022, lasted for 90 days.

According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), this is part of efforts aimed at improving safety and efficiency of flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

During the period, there was no disruptions to flight operations as the International Airport runway was used for all inbound and outbound flights operations.

Air operators have applauded the Federal Government, the aviation minister and FAAN for keeping up to the promise of delivering the project in record time.

While other stakeholders also appealed that the adjoining taxiways on the runway be given attention.

The completion of the airfield lightning systems ends the thirteen years of blackout on the runway which had led to huge losses for airlines in terms of fuel burn, flight delays and inconvenience to passengers taxing from the International Airport runway to the domestic terminal after sunset.
