Airtel emerges sole bidder of 3.5GHz Spectrum band

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced Airtel as the sole bidder for the 3.5GHz Spectrum band for deployment of fifth generation mobile network ( 5G)

A statement signed by the NCC Director Public Affairs, Mr Reuben Muoka notes that by the close of business on Monday, December 5, 2022, only two companies expressed interest in the auction of the 3.5GHz Spectrum band namely; Airtel Networks Limited (Airtel) and Standard Network & Connections Limited (Standard Network).

However, only Airtel paid the Intention to Bid Deposit (IBD) as stipulated in the Information Memorandum (IM) whereas, Standard Network sent an email appeal for the deadline to be extended by twelve (12) working days which was not acceptable in view of the auction timetable.

The statement notes that Airtel having met all the provision in the IM, has, therefore, emerged as the sole Bidder.

It further states that consequently, there shall be no further bidding and the Commission will proceed to the Assignment Stage in line with the published Information Memorandum guiding the licensing process.

It will be recalled that NCC had earlier announced it’s readines to auction two 100MHz in the 3.5GHz Spectrum Band to advance 5G technology deployment in the country.

The Commission has fixed the reserve price for its new 5G spectrums at US$273,600,000 for a 10-year licence tenure.
