The Anambra State House of Assembly has held a public hearing on the Igbo Apprenticeship Bill 2024, which seeks to regulate the traditional “Igba Boi” system by setting a seven-year cap on apprenticeship duration and mandating basic education before enrollment.
Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze said the bill aims to protect apprentices, promote transparency, and preserve the economic and cultural value of the system.
Sponsor of the bill, Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha Constituency 2), noted that the legislation would require written agreements outlining roles, duration, and settlement terms.
It also proposes a central database of apprentices and masters, as well as a mechanism for resolving disputes.
Committee Chairman on Commerce, Trade and Industry, Innocent Ojike, added that the bill would enhance investor confidence and modernize the practice to meet global standards.
Stakeholders, including market leaders and apprentices, welcomed the move, saying it would strengthen a system that has birthed many successful entrepreneurs.
The bill also proposes the creation of the Anambra State Igbo Apprenticeship Commission, which will issue certificates upon completion of apprenticeship agreements.
