Market leaders in Lagos State have threatened to stage a protest over alleged manipulation of results in some recent primary elections conducted by the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning was issued by the Iyaloja General of Lagos State, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, during a press session held at her residence in Alausa, Ikeja.
Tinubu-Ojo alleged that some aspirants backed by traders and grassroots party members were unfairly denied victory despite enjoying overwhelming support during the primaries.
“We are ready to protest. We know they won this election. The mandate should not be given to somebody else,” she declared.
The market leader specifically referenced disputes arising from party primaries in some constituencies, insisting that market associations had endorsed certain candidates based on their long-standing relationship with traders and commitment to issues affecting markets.
She cited one of the preferred aspirants from Agege Constituency II, Olaide Mutiu Oladeebo, saying he enjoyed massive support before the process was allegedly disrupted.
According to her, attempts to alter outcomes of the primaries could create disaffection among loyal party supporters and grassroots mobilisers.
Tinubu-Ojo also expressed concern over internal divisions within the APC, warning against actions capable of weakening party unity ahead of the next general elections.
While reaffirming the loyalty of market men and women to the ruling party, she stressed that traders expect greater political inclusion and recognition for their role in electoral mobilisation.
“We are prepared to vote for him, but he has to come around. We need to meet with him. We need our slots,” she said while referring to the party’s governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
She added that market leaders expect appointments, empowerment opportunities and stronger representation in government after supporting the party during elections.
The Iyaloja General warned against situations where political office holders allegedly empower only family members and close associates while neglecting grassroots traders who worked for the success of the party.
“Something must be done. We are APC members and we worked for the party. Our work should not go in vain,” she said.
Despite the grievances, Tinubu-Ojo maintained that traders across Lagos remained committed to the APC and were already mobilising for the 2027 elections through voter registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs.
The press briefing was held during the regular Tuesday gathering of market leaders at her Alausa residence and coincided with preparations for the Salah celebration.
