APWEN Inaugurates 10th Chairman Amidst Calls for Empowering Women in Engineering

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, has called on government, individuals, and organizations to assist in promoting girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM fields.

To achieve this, he emphasized on early exposure, scholarships, female role models, internships, apprenticeships, and industry partnerships.

Addressing the inauguration of the 10th Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, Lagos Chapter, Pro-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Prof. Toyin Ashiru stressed the need to challenge societal stereotypes and educational biases discouraging girls from STEM pursuits, highlighting the importance of education and representation in empowering young girls.

During a public lecture on International Women’s Day, with the theme: ‘Empowering Women Through Economic Inclusion For Equitable Future’, Prof. Ashiru emphasized the necessity of women’s inclusion in engineering for innovation and progress, lamenting the continued underrepresentation of women in the field.

“In science, technology, engineering and Mathematics, STEM, women are lacking, when you start training women in STEM, that is the key”.

APWEN President, Dr. Adebisi Osim, called for showcasing diverse stories of women excelling in engineering, breaking gender norms. 

“It is crucial that we break down this barrier not only for the benefit of women but for the progress of the engineering industry as a whole”.

The new APWEN Chairman, Lagos Chapter, Dr. Atinuke Owolabi, pledged to encourage more girls in STEM, announcing the launch of a collaborative hub for female engineering students.

“Through this initiative APWEN is poised to empowering female engineering and women engineers and catalyze positive change within the engineering community and beyond”.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, pledged support for the initiative. 

“For us in Lagos State, we are ready to partner with you and collaborate with you”.

The event featured the launch of the Resource, Technology and Innovation Hub and awards for diversity champions, Phenomenal Leadership, and Pillars of Support to notable Nigerians.
