The President of the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN, comrade John Ogbe, has called on aviation agencies and companies to strengthen collaboration with workers’ unions to prevent disruptions in the sector.
He stressed that consistent dialogue and mutual understanding between management and labour remain critical to sustaining smooth operations across the industry.
Comrade Ogbe, who spoke during a courtesy visit by the union’s national executive to the management of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company, Nahco, noted that ATSSSAN, largely made up of senior staff, adopts a cautious and balanced approach in its dealings.
He said the union is committed to supporting business growth while ensuring that workers are not sidelined in key decisions affecting their welfare.
Describing workers as essential stakeholders, the ATSSSAN, urged employers to improve staff welfare, especially in the face of current economic challenges.
He pointed out that the rising cost of living and declining value of the naira are putting pressure on workers, making it necessary for organisations to review wages and provide better incentives to retain skilled personnel.
Comrade Ogbe commended NAHCO for its investment in modern equipment and continuous training of staff, noting that such efforts not only ease operational pressure but also boost productivity.
He reaffirmed the union’s openness to dialogue, adding that with trust and cooperation, unions would not be seen as disruptive forces but as partners in progress.
Responding, NAHCO’s Group Executive Director, Corporate Services, Dr. Peter Obabori, said the company remains committed to staff welfare and has scheduled further engagement with unions to address concerns.
He highlighted ongoing investments in equipment, safety, and training, alongside performance-based incentives and staff share ownership schemes, assuring that measures are in place to cushion the impact of economic challenges while sustaining growth and profitability.
