The Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, spokesman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has lamented the multiple charges imposed by government agencies in the country’s aviation sector, describing it as a major challenge for domestic operators.
Speaking at the 4th anniversary celebration of United Nigeria Airline in Abuja, Prof. Okonkwo called on the federal government to urgently address the issue, citing the need for a single-digit loan window to support the growth of the industry.
He praised the forex policy of President Bola Tinubu, stating that it has been a significant advantage to the airline industry, allowing for the conversion of naira to foreign currencies and reducing the need for tracking funds.
Prof. Okonkwo commended the domestication of the Cape Town Convention, which has helped reduce costs for operators.
However, the AON spokesman stressed the need for improved relationships between airlines and passengers, citing the challenges posed by unruly passengers and the overemphasis on delays.
He emphasized the importance of educating the traveling public about their rights and obligations, and called for a collaborative effort between airlines, the press, and the government to address these issues.
