Bode George, Lagos APC Clash Over Nigeria’s Democratic Health

Former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George, has raised alarms over growing pressures on opposition leaders and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.

He warned that targeting dissenting voices, like Governors Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, risks weakening federalism and could edge the country toward a one-party system.

George also questioned government priorities, highlighting contributions to a private library for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu while millions of Nigerians face economic hardship.

He stressed that leadership should focus on poverty alleviation and urgent social needs.

On elections, George urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency and fairness, noting that disputed results and technical glitches have eroded public trust in the voting process.

The Lagos State APC fired back, criticising opposition parties for lacking clear agendas, cohesion, and policy alternatives.

The party said democracy thrives on constructive debate, not persistent confrontation, and urged critics to base their arguments on credible policies rather than grievance-driven rhetoric.

Both sides’ positions highlight Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with democratic engagement, accountability, and the balance between political contestation and national governance priorities as 2026 begins.
