The Federal Government has announced a planned closure of the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele section of the Third Mainland Bridge from 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024.
The closure would be done on the Lagos Island-bound carriageway of the bridge.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs Olukorede Kesha, said this is in continuation of a comprehensive repairs on the highway.
“The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works wish to inform the motoring public that the emergency repairs of Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will continue with the closure of Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound for the effective repairs of the entire section of the bridge.
“Consequent upon the above, motorists are hereby advised to use alternative routes,” she said.
Mrs. Kesha listed the alternative routes and links to include: Ojota-Ikorodu Road to Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS and Ojota-Ikorodu Road to Jibowu-Yaba-Oyingbo-Iddo to Carter Bridge and CMS.
Also listed was Gbagada to Anthony-Ikorodu Road to Funsho Williams to Eko Bridge and Apogbon to CMS.
While thanking the general public for their past cooperation and understanding, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic management officials deployed to manage traffic and ensure hitch- free movements in order to minimise the discomfort during the period.
The Federal Controller of Works had earlier disclosed in October 2023 that plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge’s asphalt layers, were in place.
She said the bridge was a lifeline for commuters in Lagos.
Keisha stated, “So we were saying let us do a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay. Some of them have been long overdue because we haven’t done that in the last 30 years. It is just the failures that have shown up that we have been addressing.”
According to her, it will be a complete overhaul of the asphalt layer on both sides and then replacing it with new ones to last the next 10 years.
She added, “The Federal government has awarded that contract already, and preparatory works are pending when the contractor moves to the site because there are some elements of repairs that need to be imported.”
