British High Commissioner Decries Prolonged ASUU Strike

The Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ben Llewellyn-Jones delivering a Lecture entitled: ‘The Significance of Education To The Growth of A Nation’ at the Lagos State University, LASU.

The Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ben Llewellyn-Jones, has expressed concern over the disruption of the nation’s University school calendar due to the ongoing strike by University lecurers.

He said that it is the prayer of the British government being a government with high passion for education that the problem rocking the nation’s University system would soon be resolved in the interest of Nigerian children.

Mr. Llewellyn-Jones expressed the concern at the Lagos State University, LASU Ojo, where he delivered a special lecture to commemorate the one year of assuption of office of the Vice Chancellor of the University,  Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello.

With a lecture entitled, The Significance of Education To The Growth of A Nation, the Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria, delved into the challenges confronting the nation’s educational system and the support the British government had been giving to Nigeria in improving its educational system.

He explained that with sound and uninterrupted school calendar in the nation’s educational system, Nigerian students particularly, the giri child would be encouraged to go to school.

Mr. Llewellyn-Jones noted that there was need to encourage more girls to go to school in Nigeria especially in the face of banditary and kidnapping which had been affecting schooling in the country in recent times.

The British representative in Nigeria emphasised that Children in schools should not be a target of war or disagreement.

He however, pledged the British government’s continued support for the nation in its quest to provide quality education for the people.

In a remark, the Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello said given a conducive environment to learn, Nigerian children have the capacity to compete favourably with their counterparts in developed countries across the world.

She however, commended the Lagos State government’s commitment towards the development of education in the state , Lagos State University in particular.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello , who attributed the modest achievements the university had recorded in the last one year that she had assumed office to the support she received from the government, students and staff of the university, promised to work assidously with the university community to make the Lagos State University the best in Africa. 

Earlier, the representative of the wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Mrs. Nkem Sofela inaugurates some projects built in the university in the last one year. 

These include, a Bakery, Skills Acquisition Centre and a Staff Club. 

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to five hundred and fifty Six students that scored Four point five Grade Point Average and above in the 2021 academic session.

The Executive members of the University’s Student Union later expressed their appreciation to the Vice- Chancellor for her dynamic leadership in the last one year by inviting her to the stage to dance  with them.
