‘Cabin Crew Are Not The Enemy’: NCAA Urges Passenger Respect in New Campaign

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has launched a robust nationwide awareness campaign to address the alarming increase in verbal and physical assaults on airline ground staff and cabin crew by passengers.

The initiative, which began with a passenger-facing educational drive at a major airport terminal, is the authority’s direct response to a growing trend of passenger aggression within the nation’s airports.

Incidents, often sparked by frustrations over flight delays, cancellations, or baggage disputes, have increasingly seen aviation workers subjected to abuse.

Leading the campaign, NCAA’s Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu emphasized the urgent need to protect industry professionals and maintain order within the aviation ecosystem.

“We have initiated this nationwide drive to arrest the rising tide of violence in the industry”.

“It is crucial for the travelling public to understand the severe dangers and legal consequences of assaulting airline personnel, whether in the terminal or aboard an aircraft.”

The campaign’s core message seeks to reframe the public’s perception of frontline aviation workers, particularly cabin crew. A central theme being promoted is: “CABIN CREW ARE NOT THE ENEMY.”

He explained, “They don’t make the rules regarding flight schedules or company policies”.

“Their primary function is to ensure your safety and assist your journey. They are highly trained safety professionals, not the cause of your travel disruptions.”

This move by the NCAA serves as a critical tie-back to its mandate under civil aviation regulations, which strictly prohibit any form of interference or assault against crew members.

Such actions can compromise flight safety, lead to significant operational disruptions, and result in severe penalties for the offending passenger, including prosecution and being blacklisted by airlines.

In his appeal for a more harmonious travel environment, the director called for a renewed sense of partnership between passengers and airline staff.

“Be you a passenger, a member of the cabin crew, or ground staff, we are all partners in this ecosystem, and we must not hurt one another,” he concluded.

The NCAA confirmed that teams of Consumer Protection and Public Relations officers will be deployed to airports across Nigeria in the coming weeks to continue the educational campaign, reinforcing the message of mutual respect and the authority’s zero-tolerance policy on violence against aviation workers.
