Catholic Church Mourns: Monsignor Gabriel Osu Passes On at 72

The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced the death of Very Rev. Msgr. Gabriel Sunsay Osu, a respected priest and former Director of Social Communications of the Archdiocese.

He died on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 72.

According to a circular issued by the Archbishop of Lagos, the late cleric passed away with the Church calling on the faithful to remain steadfast in faith and hope in the resurrection of the body.

Monsignor Osu was born on Sunday, September 5, 1954, in Ogbego Quarters, Ubulu-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

He was ordained a Catholic priest on Saturday, December 5, 1981, and dedicated over four decades of service to the Church.

During his years in ministry, he served in several parishes and institutions within the Archdiocese of Lagos, including the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos; St. Gregory College, Ikoyi; St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi; St. Paul Catholic Church, Ebute-Metta; and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.

He was also widely known for his contributions to media and evangelisation, having served for many years as the Lagos Archdiocesan Director of Social Communications.

Until his death, Monsignor Osu was resident at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Lekki.

The Archdiocese stated that funeral arrangements for the late priest would be announced later, while urging the faithful to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength and consolation for all who mourn him.

“May God grant him eternal rest and a place of happiness, light, and peace among the saints,” the statement added.
