CBAAC, EU Partners Launch Indigenous Skills Programme to Empower African Youth

In a bold step to revive Africa’s indigenous knowledge and inspire a new generation of cultural innovators, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization, CBAAC has officially launched the Roots and Roofs: Pan-African Indigenous Skills Development Programme, PAID.

The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, is one of just seven projects selected from across the continent to receive the prestigious 2025 Africa–Europe Partnership for Culture Grant, supported by the European Union under its Spaces of Culture programme.

The €50,000 grant will be jointly managed by CBAAC and the Goethe-Institut Nigeria.Roots and Roofs is designed to empower young Nigerians aged 25 to 35 by equipping them with skills in traditional African architecture, sustainable design, cultural documentation, and entrepreneurship — blending ancient wisdom with modern innovation.

Developed in partnership with European and Nigerian institutions — including the Goethe-Institut, British Council, and the Embassies of Spain and Ireland — the year-long programme will also involve the National Troupe of Nigeria and the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies at the University of Lagos.

Speaking at the launch, CBAAC Director-General Honourable Aisha Adamu Augie described the programme as both “experimental and data-driven,” with the goal of transforming cultural heritage into viable, community-driven projects.

“We’re pairing designers with storytellers to return to their communities and create projects rooted in African design and tradition,” said Augie.

“This is about innovation through heritage.”Dr. Nadine Siegert of the Goethe-Institut praised the collaboration, noting that Roots and Roofs is the only Nigerian initiative selected this year for EU cultural funding — a reflection of its strong local and international partnerships.

Representatives from the University of Lagos and the Embassies of Ireland and Spain also expressed support, highlighting the programme’s unique approach to cultural preservation, youth development, and sustainable innovation.

With a strong Pan-African vision and links to the legacy of FESTAC ’77, Roots and Roofs aims to engage over 70 participants from all 36 Nigerian states and the FCT — creating new job pathways while deepening Africa’s cultural and architectural identity.

The programme aligns with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promoting youth empowerment, job creation, and creative industry growth across the continent.
