The Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, has praised the military for their efforts in maintaining peace and stabilising the country’s democracy.
Mr. Gbajabiamila made this commendation during the inauguration of a 1,200-capacity auditorium he facilitated at Abati Army Barracks in Surulere, Lagos.
The auditorium, which is fully air-conditioned and equipped with 80KVA generator, has been named Bola Tinubu Hall.
The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Gbajabiamila, stated that this auditorium reflects a growing trend of expanding the concept of “dividends of democracy” to include the military and security forces, emphasising that their roles have evolved beyond traditional warfare to encompass internal security and civil stability.
With Nigeria facing complex security challenges, including insurgency and civil unrest, Mr. Gbajabiamila highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to recognise and improve military welfare, remarking that the military deserves better acknowledgement and dividends of democracy, even when they do not actively seek it like the civilian electorate.
He noted, “When we talk about dividends of democracy, it is usually the civilians—our people, our electorate—who demand and discuss this concept. But you, the military, do not ask for recognition. It is given to you naturally because we understand the vital role you play in Nigeria. Therefore, it is our responsibility, both as elected and unelected officials, to ensure that you live and operate in a comfortable environment that facilitates your important work.”
He asserted that this was another project aimed at ensuring the military, an integral part of any democracy, has the necessary support: “Without security, there cannot be democracy,” he emphasised.
Mr. Gbajabiamila conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare and well-being of military personnel, expressed the President’s gratitude for their sacrifices in maintaining national unity.
The new facility allows the military to host events, conduct training and conferences, and generate revenue.
He hinted at plans to demolish the old bungalows in Abati Barracks and replace them with a multi-storey residential building, stating, “This will be our next project for the barracks.” He also mentioned efforts to inaugurate an ultra-modern residential building at the nearby police barracks, promising similar improvements would come for the military.
Mr. Gbajabiamila thanked military personnel for their contributions, stating, “We appreciate how you have maintained peace and security within Surulere. While the military’s constitutional role is to protect our territorial integrity, you have stepped outside of that traditional role to maintain internal security without wavering in your duty. May God bless you and keep you, and may you continue to serve your motherland with commitment and faith in Nigeria’s unity and strength.”
He remarked that the nation’s democracy is thriving, emphasising President Tinubu’s dedication to the welfare of military personnel. “I have served many presidents and witnessed their commitments to the military,” Mr. Gbajabiamila noted. “However, I have never seen one with the kind of passion and commitment that President Bola Tinubu has for you.”
In his remarks, the Chairman of Surulere Local Government Area, Mr Bamidele Sulaimon Yusuff represented by his Vice Chairman, Mr. Muiz Dosunmu, described the council as the best in Nigeria, highlighting their peaceful relationship with the Abati Barracks community.
He acknowledged that this cooperation has led to numerous notable projects in the barracks.
Mr. Yusuff stated, “Surulere is leading in various areas: development, education, sports, and health infrastructure. We strive to be the best, and our efforts are evident without needing to boast. We believe we can achieve even more and promise to continue our progress inclusively, carrying everyone along as advised by the Chief of Staff to the President. We aim to be the focal point of everything happening in Nigeria.”
He commended Mr. Gbajabiamila for his efforts, emphasising that his contributions benefit not just the council but the state and the nation as a whole.
In his keynote address, the Director of the Nigerian Army Corps, Lt. Col. Michael Toriola, described Mr. Gbajabiamila as a role model, philanthropist, and a person with a generous heart, commending the Chief of Staff for his vision and commitment to the welfare of the military.
Lt. Col. Toriola recognised Mr. Gbajabiamila for his contributions in building the Hall and other projects within the barracks, reflecting his generosity.
“Sir, we appreciate you. This truly represents your dedication to the well-being of our officers, families, and personnel. It highlights the importance of creating an environment where we can excel and thrive. The completion of this facility, Bola Tinubu Hall, signifies more than just infrastructure; it embodies progress, professionalism, and deep pride in our service,” stated Lt. Col. Toriola.
