The Zamfara State Government has confirmed that eleven local government areas (LGAs) have been affected by a recent outbreak of cholera, prompting swift intervention from health authorities.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, made the disclosure during the distribution of cholera medications and medical consumables at the Orphans and Less Privileged Hospital in Maradun Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Information Officer, Sulaiman Isa, Dr. Maradun revealed that essential supplies had already been dispatched to Bungudu, Maru, and Maradun LGAs.
The items include intravenous fluids such as Ringer’s lactate and normal saline, rubber kettles, plastic drums, handwashing stations, soap, detergents, chlorine, and measuring cups—all aimed at controlling the spread of the disease and treating affected persons.
“The state government is committed to ensuring the distribution of these medical items across all fourteen LGAs,” the commissioner stated.
Receiving the items on behalf of his community, Chairman of Maradun Local Government, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmad Dosara, expressed appreciation to Governor Dauda Lawal and the Commissioner for Health for their timely intervention.
He assured that the medical supplies would be effectively distributed to all health facilities treating cholera patients within the local government area.
Cholera, a waterborne disease often linked to poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water, poses serious public health challenges, especially during the rainy season.
Health authorities have urged residents to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene and report any suspected symptoms to nearby healthcare centers.
