Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials To Boost Education in Rural Communities

About seven thousand women are billed to gather in Lagos next week for the annual National Women Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO.

The wife of the Lagos State Governor and Chairman of COWLSO, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu who made this known at a news briefing in Alausa Ikeja said due to COVID-19 restrictions, one thousand participants would be accommodated at the venue of the conference in Victoria Island, while about six thousand others would have opportunity to join in online.

Listing pre-event activities outlined for the conference to include an awareness/health walk and donation to orphanages, Mrs Sanwo-Olu said the theme; Awake: Stop The Violence, was specifically chosen in line with present realities.

“We want our women to awake and be in tune with modern realities; we want participants to be equipped with the skills and expertise to make a positive difference and be solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting us as a state and nation. This is the essence of the theme this year” she said.

According to her, seasoned Academics and accomplished Professionals
are billed to handle topics ranging from health and wellbeing to finance, business, and women participation in politics.

She announced that a maiden award for Inspirational Youth of the year would also be given out during the conference, while a virtual market for participants to buy and sell would also be in place.

In consonance with COWLSO’s empowerment projects, Mrs Sanwo-Olu said this year, the focus would be on the education sector as the organisation would partner with the Ministry of Education on a School project.

She said all the proceeds from the annual conference which would hold between 26th and 28th October would be channeled to procuring equipment both for students in rural areas and children with special needs.

“All proceeds from this conference will be channeled towards things that will help our children and not only that, we will ensure that our children have the best equipment to learn.
We will also be looking at ensuring that children with special needs have the necessary equipment to learn. Education is the bedrock of society and it is very important that we catch them young. And so, that is one of the reasons we don’t joke with the National Women’s Conference” she stated.

Dr Sanwo-Olu announced that the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari would grace the occasion as the Mother of the Day, while the Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu would declare the Conference Open.
