Court Adjourns Abiodun Disqualification Suit Hearing Until July 9

Proceedings in a suit seeking the disqualification of Dapo Abiodun over alleged perjury and false oath declarations have been adjourned by the Federal High Court in Lagos until July 9, 2026, for substantive hearing.

At Tuesday’s sitting, counsel to the plaintiffs, Yemi Oke (SAN), informed the court that all parties had been duly served with the originating processes and requested a definite hearing date.

The presiding judge, Chukwujekwu Aneke, granted the application and adjourned the matter to enable the commencement of full proceedings.

The suit, filed by the Human Global Resource Initiative, Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA), and Buna Olaitan Isiak, lists several defendants, including the Department of State Services, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and major political parties.

Plaintiffs are asking the court to disqualify Governor Abiodun from holding public office, alleging that he made false declarations under oath and submitted conflicting documents to INEC during previous election cycles.

Key issues in the case include alleged discrepancies in the governor’s educational records for the 2014, 2019, and 2023 elections, alongside claims that he failed to disclose a purported prior indictment and imprisonment dating back to 1986.

According to the plaintiffs, these alleged omissions violate provisions of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria and the Electoral Act 2022.

They are seeking, among other reliefs, a perpetual injunction restraining INEC and political parties from recognising or nominating the governor for any elective office.
