The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has received commendation for constructing the Permanent Door of Return in Badagry, a historic monument symbolizing the reconnection of descendants of enslaved Africans to their ancestral homeland.
The commendation came from the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, during the fifth Door of Return Ceremony of the Diaspora Festival held in Badagry.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa revealed that over 2,000 members of the African diaspora will participate in a historic voyage to Badagry in 2026, to be organized under the chairmanship of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.
She explained that next year’s festival would include an emotional voyage from Brazil and Cuba to Nigeria, giving participants a symbolic experience of homecoming.
“This year’s edition is just a test-run. President Bola Tinubu, who initiated the Black Heritage concept as Lagos State Governor, will personally receive the returnees next year in Badagry,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
Professor Wole Soyinka, in his remarks, emphasized that the journey of the African people remains incomplete until they reconnect with their roots, describing the festival as “a symbolic launchpad for the long-awaited return.”
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr. Idris Aregbe, praised the festival as a living testament to Lagos State’s commitment to cultural revival and diaspora unity.
“Badagry remains the cradle of return, and we’ll continue to support its global recognition,” Aregbe assured.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Lagos State House Committee on Tourism and Arts, Mr. Bonu Solomon, described the event as a heritage bridge between Africa and her children abroad, pledging continuous legislative support for initiatives that promote tourism, culture, and historical preservation.
The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, reaffirmed his council’s readiness to sustain cultural programmes that deepen tourism and economic growth in the ancient town.
Highlights of the colourful event included Boat Regatta, Zangbeto masquerade displays, Sato—the tallest drum in Africa, Akohun and Agasa cultural performances, and a Communities Parade showcasing Badagry’s rich heritage.
