Democracy Day 2025: Epe LG Boss Calls for National Unity, Civic Responsibility

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day 2025, the Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, has issued a stirring call for Nigerians to deepen their commitment to democratic values, emphasizing that the power of the people remains the cornerstone of national progress.

In a Democracy Day message titled “Our Voice, Our Power, Our Nigeria,” the council boss paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing them as courageous patriots whose sacrifices secured the freedoms and rights enjoyed today.

“We honour the brave men and women who stood tall in the face of oppression, some of whom paid the ultimate price so we could enjoy the right to vote, to speak freely, and to be heard,” she said. “Their legacy endures in every Nigerian who stands for justice, unity, and the promise of a better nation.”

Princess Animashaun stressed that democracy must go beyond periodic elections, highlighting the need for active civic participation, institutional accountability, and shared national responsibility.

“Democracy is not just about casting ballots—it’s about inclusion, responsibility, and the belief that every voice matters,” she said. “We have come a long way as a nation, but we must not relent. Together, we must push forward with renewed hope and commitment.”

To the people of Epe, she extended special recognition, describing them as tenacious, noble, and resilient contributors to the Nigerian story. She urged all Nigerians to see June 12 as a call to action, not just celebration.

“Let this day renew our faith in the democratic promise. Let it remind us that our diversity is our strength and that the future we desire depends on the choices we make today,” she added.

“Let us defend our democracy. Let us uphold our rights. Let us build the Nigeria we all deserve—one where every citizen is valued, and every voice counts.”

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in remembrance of the annulled 1993 presidential election—widely regarded as Nigeria’s fairest—and in honour of those who fought tirelessly for democratic governance and civil liberties.
