Expert Canvasses Better Funding for Special Education

There is need for the Lagos State government to invest more in the funding of Special needs Education for children with intellectual disabilities.

Chief Executive Officer of Learning Helpers, LLC, Dr Olabimpe Abayomi-Ige, who is based in the United States of America, made the call in an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos via Zoom.

Dr Abayomi-Ige who frowned at wrong diagnosis of children with intellectual disability, urged teachers of special embrace individual proximal development approach of teaching and learning for special needs students.

The Disability Expert advocated inclusiveness in all schools to enable special needs students be accepted in the society and study at per with their abled bodies counterpart for easy assimilation at their own pace.

Dr Abayomi-Ige expressed enthusiasm to voluntarily train and educate Non-Governmental Organizations, religious organizations and Parents of children with intellectual disability in Lagos and Nigeria, if given the opportunity.

She advocated child fine for any parent or caregiver who hide children with disabilities at home without getting qualitative special education with a view to serving as deterrent to others.
