Eastern Ports Upgrade Set to Boost Nigeria’s Cargo Traffic

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has intensified efforts to revive cargo movement by rehabilitating key Eastern ports, including Onne, Warri and Calabar, as part of a broader strategy to enhance capacity and efficiency.

Managing Director of the authority, Abubakar Dantsoho, said the initiative goes beyond infrastructure renewal, noting that the NPA is also providing technical support to promoters of deep seaports to attract vessel traffic to the Eastern corridor sustainably.

Speaking at the 37th Enugu International Trade Fair, Dantsoho outlined a comprehensive reform agenda focused on boosting non-oil exports through modernised port infrastructure, streamlined export procedures and full automation of operations.

Central to the reforms is the establishment of Export Process Terminals (EPTs), designed as one-stop hubs for cargo consolidation, documentation, packaging, certification and shipment, aimed at eliminating delays and inefficiencies that previously weakened Nigeria’s export competitiveness.

He added that the EPTs will be integrated with Domestic Export Warehouses and supported by the National Single Window system to reduce human interference, curb corruption and improve ease of doing business, while positioning local producers and SMEs for greater access to global markets.
