Editors Urge Action on Insecurity, Economy, Media Freedom Protection

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has raised alarm over Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, insecurity, poor governance, and declining education sector.

In a communiqué issued after its Standing Committee Meeting in Owerri, the Guild urged the federal government to strengthen safety nets to ease poverty, inflation, and hardship caused by ongoing reforms.

It also called for a holistic security strategy, including intelligence gathering, community policing, and stronger partnerships to restore confidence in farmers and boost food production.

The editors decried underfunding in education, urging increased investment in schools, infrastructure, and teacher welfare, stressing that education drives innovation and economic growth.

On press freedom, the Guild condemned rising hostility against journalists and warned that attempts to weaken the media threaten democracy and accountability.

The NGE also appealed for transparency and pragmatic governance at all levels, while thanking Governor Hope Uzodimma for his media-friendly stance and development efforts in Imo State.
