Edo Chosen as South-South Red Meat Processing Hub

The Federal Government has designated Edo State as the regional hub for red meat production and processing in the South-South region, as part of a broader plan to modernize Nigeria’s livestock value chain.

Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced this in Abuja when he received the Edo State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Professor Ikponwosa Omorodion.

He said the move aligns with government efforts to phase out manual slaughtering and open trade in live animals across the country.

Maiha described manual slaughter practices as unhygienic and outdated, noting that transitioning to processed red meat trading will improve food safety, create jobs, and attract new investments into the livestock sector.

He revealed that the Federal Government, in partnership with the Edo State Government and private investors, will revive the Igarra and Ubiaja grazing reserves to serve as modern livestock hubs that meet global hygiene and quality standards.

The Minister added that the long-term goal is to establish a disease-free livestock zone, certified by veterinary experts, to ensure all meat products from the area are safe and suitable for both local consumption and export.

In his remarks, Professor Omorodion said Edo’s strategic location makes it ideal to serve the South-South livestock market, covering the full value chain—from production and processing to marketing—and strengthening the state’s economy through livestock-driven growth.
