In a decisive move to combat perennial flooding, the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State has commenced a large-scale Canal Rehabilitation and Flood Control Project across several beleaguered communities.
The council’s initiative, flagged off on Monday, targets high-risk areas including Gbar-Aro, Mayegun, the Osapa-Agungi Axis, the Femi-Okunnu to Igbokushu Corridor, Busola Durosimi, and Eti Community.
These locations have long suffered from recurrent flooding, leading to property damage, road closures, and health risks, especially during the rainy season.
The Executive Chairman of the Council, Mr. Omoba Adetoro, stated that the project is a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda on environmental sustainability and public safety.
“This initiative aims to reduce the risks of seasonal flooding through clearing, dredging, and restoring canal channels,” Adetoro said.
He added that the project would also tackle the related challenges of illegal waste dumping and poor sanitation practices.
According to project details, the work, which began on Saturday, includes: Desilting and dredging of canals to restore natural water flow; Clearing blocked drainage channels and evacuating waste, debris, and biodegradable materials; Community sensitization on proper waste disposal and environmental hygiene.
The council has pledged to provide residents with regular updates and emphasized that community cooperation is crucial for the project’s long-term success.
Residents have been urged to refrain from dumping refuse in canals and to report environmental violations.
Beyond immediate flood relief, the initiative is expected to improve long-term environmental health and prevent further deterioration of infrastructure within Eti-Osa.
