The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reached a major milestone in its ongoing reform agenda with the award of two internationally recognised certifications, signalling a new phase in the management of Nigeria’s airports.
FAAN has received the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications, which cover quality management systems and environmental management systems respectively.
The certificates were formally presented to FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, at the Authority’s headquarters in Lagos, following months of rigorous audits, internal reviews and organisational realignment.
Issued by Canada-based certification body MSECB, the awards confirm that FAAN’s operational processes and environmental practices now meet internationally accepted best standards.
Aviation analysts say the development positions Nigeria’s airport authority among a growing number of modern and competitive airport operators globally, at a time when international benchmarking has become increasingly important.
The achievement has been widely linked to reforms introduced under Mrs Kuku’s leadership, which have prioritised tighter operational processes, stronger accountability and performance-driven management.
Since assuming office, she has championed institutional changes aimed at improving service consistency and embedding a culture of continuous improvement across the Authority.
Central to the reforms is the adoption of an Integrated Management System, which harmonised operations and marked a shift from reactive decision-making to standards-based governance.
Beyond their symbolic value, the certifications carry significant operational implications. ISO 9001 reinforces FAAN’s commitment to reliable service delivery, customer satisfaction and risk-based management, while ISO 14001 underscores structured environmental stewardship across airport operations.
Together, the certifications are expected to enhance FAAN’s credibility with international airlines, regulators, development partners and passengers, as Nigeria positions its airports as viable regional aviation hubs.
With the certifications secured, industry observers note that the focus will now shift to sustainability, stressing that the real test lies in maintaining the standards and translating them into consistent, visible improvements across airports nationwide.
