Falconets boost World Cup chance with triumph over Cameroon

Nigeria reached the final round of the qualification series for this year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, Costa Rica 2022 as the Falconets thrashed their Cameroonian counterparts 3-0 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

The encounter was the first international match at Nigeria’s premium sporting arena since the Super Falcons defeated their Senegalese counterparts 2-0 in a Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match in April 2016.

Midfielder, Esther Onyenezide scored a brace with another by Precious Vincent to send the Young Lionesses back to Yaounde empty-handed.

Onyenezide struck after 22 minutes before Vincent increased the tally eight minutes from half time and then a third goal by Onyenezide coming in the 73rd minute to put the match beyond the Lionesses.

The Falconets will face the young Teranga Lionesses of Senegal in an all West African final round showdown in March for a slot at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in August.

Senegal beat Morocco 5-4 in a penalty shootout after playing 1-1 at regulation time.

Meanwhile, their senior counterparts, the Super Falcons who are currently in camp for their Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifier against Cote d’Ivoire were at the stadium to cheer the girls.
