FG Approves Construction of Lekki Airport, Lagos.

The Federal government has officially given approval to the Lagos State government to commence the construction of Lekki International Airport.

The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Hadi Sirika presented the letter of approval to Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu at the ongoing ninth Lagos Economic Summit, tagged “Ehingbeti 2022” in Victoria Island.

The two day summit themed “Charting the Paths to Sustainable Socio-economic Growth” is focusing on ways to fund some of the initiatives in the 30-year development plan of Lagos State, how to harness potential in the built environment, change the face of Lagos through art and entertainment, examine challenges and opportunities in the education sector that the state government can lashed onto to enhance the economic future of Lagos, amongst others.

The Minister noted that Lagos has the resources and exigencies for an additional airport which would help to decongest Murtala Mohammed
International Airport.

“Murtala Mohammed is too congested and of course far away from the centre of action at the moment, because there’s a new Lagos we have Eko Atlantic City, Lekki Free Zone, Lagos need this airport yesterday and more than capable to have it, we will of course get our Agencies to supervise and ensure that it is done very well” the Minister promised.

Governor Sanwo-Olu who was elated over the development said that the project is for the benefit of all residents in the state as it would boost socio-economic activities in Lekki and its environs.

The proposed Lekki International Airport is designed for a capacity of five million passengers and Cargoes.

Earlier, while declaring the summit open, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the Development Plan: 2022-2052 was based on four strategic Pillars: thriving economy, human -centric city, Modern Infrastructure and effective governance, which implementation requires purposeful and dedicated leadership.

Resolutions from the annual summit which begun in the year 2000, have been serving as a guide to Lagos state’s ambitions to become Africa’s Model Mega and smartest City.
