The Federal Government is closely monitoring flooding in several communities across Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, following days of persistent torrential rainfall that have severely disrupted daily life and damaged infrastructure.
Heavily impacted areas include Baba Adisa, Aiyeteju, Kaiyetoro, Araromi, Orimedu, and Onosa, where residents are grappling with inundated homes, blocked roads, and rising health and safety concerns.
In a swift local response, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki, Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, commissioned an environmental assessment through the office of the Chief Technical Adviser on Environment.
A preliminary impact report has since been submitted and is currently under review.
A statement from the local government disclosed that a multi-layered action plan is in development, targeting both immediate relief and long-term flood control solutions.
A technical task force made up of engineers, environmental experts, and community representatives is set to be inaugurated this week to analyze findings and recommend practical interventions.
“We understand the distress this has caused. Our strategy is not just about addressing today’s flooding, but building long-term resilience by coordinating with both state and federal agencies,” Olowa said.
The Federal Ministry of Environment and national disaster response agencies have been officially notified and are expected to collaborate with local authorities to mitigate further damage and bolster infrastructure against future occurrences.
Residents are urged to remain calm and cooperative as government efforts intensify.
Authorities have promised continuous updates and transparent communication throughout the intervention process.
