The Federal Government has issued a flood alert to residents in 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory, warning that 198 local government areas may be affected between August 7 and 21.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, says the warning follows persistent rainfall and rising water levels across major rivers.
Director-General of the agency, Umar Ibrahim, said over 100 communities and key transport routes could face severe disruption, while 832 communities fall within high-risk zones.
States listed include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
NIHSA has advised emergency agencies to activate contingency plans and urged residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for possible evacuation.
The agency also encouraged Nigerians to follow its weekly forecasts and flood dashboard for real-time updates, stressing that early action is key to reducing the destruction seasonal flooding causes to lives, property, and infrastructure nationwide.
